Origin Story
Even on the job, he was always just having fun. Zeke loved being the entry-man. First on the scene and far from danger were the two places he always wanted to be. He'd crash through the window of a building to allow ten more SW AT guys in. As the one taking glass to the face, he was expected to step aside. Worked for him.
“You’re damn good, Levelle." a senior officer said. "I'm planning to have you added to our aerial infiltration unit for a mission next month."
"Is that right?" Zeke replied, fearless.
"Need you to see Giz before then. He cooked up something you're gonna need."
"Copy, Sir.”
Zeke entered a secret facility that housed tons of combat and special ops equipment.
Levelle! I got a gadget that's gonna change your life."
"Oh. Thought it was just for this big mission!”
"Sure, started that way. But this thing's a game changer for a guy like you.”
"Alright, what is it?” Zeke's eyes narrowed.
Giz lifted a little robot from behind his work bench." This is ZIP-E.”
"ZIP-E? “
"Zip Line Initiation and Protection Engine."
"This thing is gonna protect me?" Zeke flicked the bot, causing Gic to cradle it and step back.
"And much more."
"If you so so, Gie. I trust ya."
Zeke took Zip-E the following day on a call. the man the cord through the bot and issued his command.
"To the next rooftop....... ZIP-E... A line shot forth from inside its body and stuck precisely where Zeke would have attached it. He took it across, followed by his new tech.
"Impressive” he admitted. ZIP-E clapped in response.
After a flawless performance, Zeke was left feeling unnecessary. ZIP-E could perform entries without him and he knew it. He did his best not to let: get to him.
After a month of being outshined by the plucky bot, the day arrived for the aerial infiltration. The unit tracked down smugglers and were en route to intercept their plane. Fed up with the overzealous robot, Zeke stuffed it in a bag and readied his line for shooting, intending to complete the mission without any assistance. The smuggler's plane drew near, so Zeke fired. Direct hit. He hooked on and zipped into danger.
At the middle of the cord, Zeke felt a drop. Sharp and sudden. He was just past halfway across when he realized his line had hit a damaged panel of the rickety aircraft. ZIP-E would never make that mistake.
Zeke's hands gripped the cord tightly, but the panel on the smuggler plane popped off. He dropped like the down-swing of a pendulum. At the bottom, the cord snapped. Zeke was in free-fall.
Light beamed down from above. Two lights. ZIP-E rolled off the planes edge and dove for him. It printed a line from inside its body and threw it downward to Zeke. He caught it, but it was thick, bumpy, with bulbous ends. A faulty print. Zeke reached it up for ZIP-E to grab. The robot reached him and produced a new line. It grew from him in both directions. A perfect print.
Zeke's heart pounded. The ground was approaching fast. ZIP-E hooked him to the new line and then stayed still.
"What now?"
ZIP-E shrugged.
"Just take us anywhere!" Before splatting, there was a flash of light and suddenly, Zeke was sliding down the line, surrounded by trees. At the ends of the cord on either side were shimmering patches of light. Portals.
"Giz! You mad man!”
Fast approaching the end portal, Zeke issued a new command.
"ZIP-E, smuggler's plane." Zeke gripped the misprinted cord and bashed in the heads of five smugglers as he passed through the plane at top speed. Still moving, he issued a new command.
"Home! ”
ZIP-E obliged, taking Zeke to the center of his house, but momentum was beyond control. Zeke had no time to unhook. Even if he did, he'd be killed on impact.
“Ocean!” Zeke ordered, mind racing.
They flashed beneath the surface, where Zeke’s body began to vaporise the water surrounding them.
“Pillows!” Zeke shouted, expecting a pillow factory where he could unclip and slam into a pile of pillows. Instead, he and ZIP-E were in a hellish place, where he smacked a drowsy giant in the head with his club.
Zeke realized he could never stop again. His life was now speed, momentum, blunt force. His life became the ZipLine.
